ThermiVa®
As women undergo physical changes over the decades of aging and with vaginal deliveries, the birth canal and skin of the external labia stretches causing looseness or laxity. After menopause or when taking anti-estrogen medication for treating breast cancer, lubrication or moisture is diminished or lost. Tightness and painful intercourse may follow. Stress urinary incontinence which causes leakage with coughing, sneezing or laughing commonly results from poor muscle tone in the vagina. Many women wish to regain their prior youthful vaginal and vulva appearance and function – whether following vaginal childbirth, anti-estrogen hormonal therapy, or the natural aging process.
Although vaginal rejuvenation surgery has been the traditional method for correcting vaginal or labial tissue that has been stretched, weakened, is excessively dry, or functions abnormally, women can correct these problems with the non-surgical procedure known as ThermiVa®. In addition ThermiVa can effectively treat dryness and discomfort typically seen after menopause and post-hormone therapy for breast cancer.

How Does ThermiVa Work?
ThermiVa is the first and most effective temperature-controlled system that utilizes radiofrequency energy to tighten the vaginal and labial tissues, restore vaginal muscle function and moisture, and tighten skin of the vulva for more youthful skin tone and appearance. Saratoga Springs Plastic Surgery, PC is the only practice within 100 miles of Albany offering ThermiVa vaginal rejuvenation.
This state-of-the-art procedure helps our patients to reclaim their pre-baby body, restore their comfort, and revive their intimacy. ThermiVa creates softer, thicker, more lubricated vaginal mucosa in those bothered by dryness, chaffing and painful intercourse and helps nerves regenerate to enhance vaginal and clitoral sensation with intimacy. Many treated older women report a greater ability to reach orgasm. It is a virtually painless “lunchtime” procedure, due to its short 30-minute treatment time and lack of downtime. Women feel little to no discomfort during the treatment and report that they are thrilled with the results they have achieved. They can resume all of their activities including sexual relations on the treatment day.
What Conditions Can ThermiVa Treat?
Our plastic surgeon, Dr. Dimitri Koumanis, and his expertly trained and experienced ThermiVa technician have found that while not appropriate for all patients, since the labia minora are not significantly reduced in size, ThermiVa treatments can successfully help patients with the following concerns:
- Loose tissue or skin of the vagina canal, vulva, and labia majora which often occurs after childbirth and with aging
- Dryness of the external skin and internal vaginal canal or atrophic vaginitis which often occurs after menopause and post anti-estrogen hormone therapy for breast cancer.
- Mild to moderate urinary stress incontinence or leakage with sneezing, coughing or laughing
- Sexual dysfunction including painful sex due to dryness and diminished sensation and difficulty achieving orgasm
- Mild to moderate pelvic prolapse due to vaginal muscle looseness
Viagra® has enhanced the lives of many men who experience erectile dysfunction or impotence. Now ThermiVa offers women an alternative to both medication and surgery to enhance their overall sex life and sexual well-being.
Patient Experience
What Our ThermiVa® Patients Have To Say
I am more than pleased with my ThermiVa results. I did lots of reading and research about the procedure first, then Dr. Yarinsky explained the simple procedure so I figured I had to try. I had a dwindling libido, changes like dryness and not feeling as excited about sex with my partner… I feel like I did in my 30’s and I would recommend this anyone even if they are only having minor changes as its seems like you have nothing to lose but reversing age-related changes. I’m very happy with the ThermiVa treatments as well as Dr. Yarinsky and Holly made me feel very comfortable.
Does ThermiVa Work?
Since being cleared by the FDA in 2013, ThermiVa has helped numerous women improve their vaginal health and wellness. The procedure has been performed more than 204,000 times worldwide since 20161. In a study evaluating the popular treatment’s potential, 78 percent of the female participants said they were satisfied or very satisfied with their results. The women achieved positive changes in a variety of cosmetic and functional concerns, including significant improvement in sexual satisfaction, reversal of atrophic vaginitis (causing pain and dryness seen with aging and after hormone therapy for treating breast cancer), and correction of vulvovaginal laxity (looseness seen after childbirth). For a closer look at the four-month study and its unprecedented data, read the article below.
As ThermiVa continues to grow in popularity, the procedure has been recognized as one of the 2019 “Most Worth It” procedures on RealSelf. This status was achieved by only 53 aesthetic procedures out of the over 500 presented on RealSelf.com. As of June 2025, 100 percent of women treated rated the results “worth it.”2 As a “Most Worth It” procedure, ThermiVa has been ranked one of the top cosmetic procedures by RealSelf users who were treated.
What Can I Expect During the ThermiVa Procedure?
The ThermiVa procedure is performed in our private in-house treatment suite. Using a disposable handpiece, Dr. Koumanis and his staff deliver warmth with radiofrequency energy to effectively tighten the internal and/or external vulvovaginal tissue. Treated areas include the labia minora, labia majora and vaginal canal. This painless gentle heating process promotes new collagen production and healing of the tissue, increases blood flow, stimulates sensory nerve regeneration and restores youthful vaginal tightness and lubrication.
With its thin, gently curved thermistor tip, ThermiVa allows complete control over the heat delivery and provides optimal comfort for the patient. Each painless session takes approximately 30 minutes to complete, and three treatments, spaced a month apart, are typically recommended to achieve optimum desired results. Since there is no pain or stinging throughout the procedure, no anesthesia or numbing agents are necessary. Regular activities can be immediately resumed.

What Is Recovery Like After ThermiVa?
There is absolutely no downtime following a ThermiVa session. Patients can go back to their daily activities immediately, and sexual activity can also be resumed immediately after treatment. Many women notice the positive effects within days after their first treatment. They experience gradual improvement over the course of three to four months with a series of the recommended three monthly sessions. As the vaginal and labial tissue continues to improve resulting in more youthful quality, patients can benefit from the following:
- More comfort in tight clothing due to tightened labial and vaginal tissue (external tightening)
- Noticeably smoother, moister and softer skin
- Increased vaginal canal moisture and less irritation or pain with sexual intercourse
- Reduction of mild to moderate bladder/pelvic prolapse
- Reduction of looseness seen after vaginal childbirth
- Reduction in urinary leakage and accidents with sneezing, coughing or laughing
- Heightened sensitivity in the vagina and clitoris and improved muscular contractions, often restoring the ability to achieve orgasm in those who have sexual dysfunction and helps them to climax more rapidly
How Long Do ThermiVa Results Last?
Many women notice improvements within days of their first treatment. The results continue to improve over several months as new collagen develops and tissue remodeling occurs. Results often last for up to 9–12 months, but single maintenance treatments can be performed as often as one to two times per year to preserve the results and benefits.
Is ThermiVa Safe?
Yes, ThermiVa is considered safe when performed by experienced providers like Dr. Koumanis. It is FDA-cleared and uses non-invasive radiofrequency (RF) energy, eliminating the need for incisions, stitches, or anesthesia. This greatly reduces the risks typically associated with surgical vaginal rejuvenation procedures.
The device features a temperature-controlled handpiece with built-in safety mechanisms to ensure precise heat delivery, preventing burns or damage to surrounding tissues. Each treatment uses a single-use, sterile applicator, reducing the risk of infection.
Most women describe the procedure as warm and comfortable, and because no anesthesia is needed, there is no downtime needed. Patients can resume normal activities, including sexual intimacy, the same day.
Additional ThermiVa Frequently Asked Questions
How Long Does a ThermiVa Session Take?
Each ThermiVa session typically takes about 30 minutes to complete, making it a convenient option for even the busiest schedules. The procedure is performed in a comfortable, private setting and is often referred to as a “lunchtime treatment” because patients can easily fit it into their day without disrupting their normal activities. There is no downtime, allowing patients to immediately return to work, exercise, or other daily commitments following their session.
Is ThermiVa Painful?
No, ThermiVa treatments are generally considered very comfortable. Most patients report experiencing a sensation of gentle warmth during the procedure but do not describe it as painful. Thanks to the device’s temperature-controlled technology, the heat remains within a therapeutic range that is both safe and tolerable. As a result, no anesthesia or numbing creams are necessary, and patients can relax throughout the session without discomfort.
How Many ThermiVa Treatments Will I Need?
For most patients, a series of three ThermiVa treatments spaced approximately four weeks apart is recommended to achieve the best possible results. This schedule allows time for the body to begin the natural processes of collagen production, tissue tightening, and increased blood flow. After completing the initial series, maintenance treatments can be performed once or twice per year to help preserve the improvements in tissue tone, moisture, and function. Dr. Koumanis will personalize a treatment plan based on each patient’s unique needs and goals.
Can ThermiVa Help with Urinary Incontinence?
Yes, ThermiVa can help reduce mild to moderate stress urinary incontinence by strengthening and tightening the vaginal tissues. Using gentle radiofrequency energy, ThermiVa stimulates collagen production and enhances tissue support around the bladder and urethra. This can lead to a noticeable decrease in urine leakage during activities like coughing, sneezing, or exercise. While not a solution for severe cases, ThermiVa offers a non-surgical, low-risk option for many women seeking to improve bladder control without downtime.
